What is the Difference Between the Cyber Security Operations and Leadership and Cyber Security Engineering Programs?
Monday, February 26, 2024
While both focus on the booming industry of cyber security, we offer two unique programs that will help launch your career in either engineering or leading cyber defense efforts.
USD is proud two offer two distinct options for students interested in advancing their career in cyber security or entering this dynamic field. Our Master of Science in Cyber Security Engineering (MS-CSE) and our Master of Science in Cyber Security Operations and Leadership (MS-CSOL) give you the options of pursuing a more technical degree in the area or building skills to lead cyber security efforts.
Master of Science in Cyber Security Engineering
- Apply the foundational concepts of cybersecurity and engineering principles to architect, build, and field secure systems.
- Analyze a system to determine the security objectives, policies, and threats, and select appropriate and cost-effective controls to mitigate risk.
- Perform system security assessments by applying skills in security testing, forensics, incident response, and continuity planning in order to identify potential weaknesses and solutions.

Cyber Security Operations and Leadership
Students with a passion for cyber security and an aptitude for leadership and organization, our MS-CSOL program provides a unique blend of security studies and leadership training. This course builds skills to help you identify and mitigate threats, identify physical and technical risks and also how a system can be damaged.
With less focus on the technical skills needed for cyber security, you’ll focus on the theory and practical knowledge of cryptography, cyber law, policy making, digital forensics, risk management, and cyber intelligence.
This program is aimed at students who want to move into a leadership position while having a background of the technical side of cybersecurity. If you want to learn how to effectively lead a team to handle cybersecurity threats, this program will equip you with the skills to do just that. Your background may be in areas such as the military, government, computer science, security and law enforcement, or project management.
As this program is less technical and focused more on the leadership skills required to lead cyber defense efforts, graduates will master the skills needed to:
- Develop specialized field knowledge and integrate knowledge across content areas of cybersecurity.
- Demonstrate critical inquiry through field-based approaches and methods and through effective and ethical information search strategies.
- Apply learning across multiple contexts within the field, integrating knowledge and practice specifically relating to the areas of cybersecurity and leadership.
- Reason ethically in evaluating general perspectives, policies, and/or practices relevant to cybersecurity as well as evaluating diverse points of view to include temporal, cultural, linguistic, sociopolitical and/or technological contexts.
As the demand for cyber security experts increases, so does the demand for skilled leaders to manage the increasingly complex cyber defense systems. This program will give you the practical and theoretical skills to succeed in a wide range of positions, including:
- Chief Information Security Officer
- Chief Security Officer
- Chief Risk Officer
- Security Director
- Information Security Analyst
- Penetration Tester
